Especially when building a high performance motor, you should be sure to use all new components to minimize the chances of failure. The upper spring plate is just such a part. The valve keepers pound into these plates millions of times and even though they might look good, the conical bore in the center can wear and open up. This part is often re-used but they are not expensive and should be changed when reconditioning the heads.
